Honeycomb September 2010
Rector's Remarks
The season of mists and mellow fruitfulness are coming upon us as we enter the month of September. Actually, I am never sure about the “mellow” fruitfulness. The fruitfulness actually means a lot of hard work for all who grow our food. If you have a vegetable patch in your garden or an allotment, it is time of digging and picking almost every day. The same goes for the owners of many fruit trees and the harvesters of hedgerows. All this fruitfulness lands in the kitchen where it has to be prepared so that the harvest will last throughout the winter. For the farmers this and possibly last month, depending on the weather, are their busiest time of the year with the headlights on the combine harvesters being seen well into the night.
All the produce that we grow or is grown around us will ensure us a ready supply of food throughout the winter until summer comes round again. This local food is a real blessing. It comes to us with minimal impact on our environment. If it is grown in our back gardens it will have no “food miles” and very few if we have an allotment. If it is grown by our local farmers the “food miles” will be minimal and by buying it we will be supporting our friends who farm around here.
“Food miles” are a real issue. You will recall Europe’s air space was shut down for 6 days in April thanks to the volcano with the unpronounceable name in Iceland. Many people suffered serious hardship as a result of that ash cloud. A group really badly hit were the 3rd world farmers who have converted their land from subsistence farming to growing crops for the 1st world market. Thanks to them we can eat salad and strawberries in the middle of winter but when the airlines ceased to function for six days those crops rotted on the land and the 3rd world farmers’ income dropped to zero. It was a very painful time for them but it also highlighted a real issue about our food. All those lovely fruit and veg items that we enjoy in the middle of winter come with a hefty price tag to the environment. Air traffic is one of the major contributors to global warming. Yet if we do not buy those products the 3rd world farmers suffer. They have given up their traditional subsistence farming so as to supply us with winter luxury. Their traditional subsistence farming gave them food to eat and they sold their surplus to buy essentials such as health care and education. Now they are totally dependent on us.
When buying 3rd world products, many of us try to help those farmers by purchasing fair trade products. In that way we know that the farmers who grew our coffee, bananas and so on are receiving a fair price for their investment and labour. However we have not caught on to the need for fair trade for our own farmers. Whilst there are some harvests that do produce a fair return, many do not – milk, lamb and pork all come to mind. The supermarkets are either paying less than it costs our farmers to produce those items or they are importing products from countries that do not have the high animal welfare standard that we do in this country. As a result we get apparently cheap food but our own farmers suffer.
I would like to suggest the buying food that has been produced locally will actually help both 3rd world farmers and our own. If we cease to buy the mass produced food grown in the 3rd world those farmers will return to their traditional subsistence farming ensuring their independence from us and the global market. It will also help our own farmers whose income will be more assured. The environment will also benefit through reduced CO2 emissions.
Shortly we will be celebrating our harvest festivals in all our villages (Dean & Melchbourne – 3rd October 10.30am at Melchbourne; Pertenhall – 26th September 10.30am; Shelton – 3rd October 6pm; Swineshead – 17th October 10.30am; and Yelden – 17th October 6pm). Hopefully you will be joining in one of those festival in which we give thanks to God and to all the people involved in food production. It is a chance to celebrate God’s generosity to us in all that he gives us through creation and hopefully it is a chance for us to be generous in return through careful and thought through decisions when we buy our food.

Dean Dog Day
We awoke on Sunday 30th May to a bright, but very windy, chilly day. Would anyone turn up? If they did would the dogs behave? Would we see blood on the cricket pitch before dark? (hopefully not ours) Well none of that happened and so many of you turned up with all sorts of dogs, small, large, young and old. From pedigree dogs to pooches and they were all great in their own right.
From the Best biscuit catcher to the cutest puppy and the best veteran, everyone went home with a super rosette thanks to our generous sponsors, a biscuit for the dog and I guess a huge smile after a lovely day out. Certainly the judges had a hard time doing their job as I have never seen so many clean and well brushed dogs and as they say “Every One a Winner”. Our secret weapon of the day was the wonderful refreshments that the Dean Ladies provided and for some dog-less people they were more than happy to sit with a cup of tea/coffee, a lunch or a piece of cake and watch the proceedings from the warmth of the Dalton Hall.
As well as having a good day out, we were able to send a cheque for 㿲 to the Dogs Trust Charity. Our sincere thanks go to everyone who made this event possible and hopefully we can bring all the dogs together again next year for another party, lets have more of you.

Helpful Hints From Your Local Community First Responders
In an emergency, you should stay calm and dial 999
The 999controller will ask for some information including:· The Phone number you are calling from,
· Location of the incident,
· Details of what is wrong and what has happened,
An Ambulance response will be dispatched immediately, (also if considered
necessary, a local Community First Responder), but you will be asked to stay
on the phone, so that the call taker can give you medical advice on how best
to help the patient. This will not delay the Ambulance.
There are several ways you can help the Ambulance, Responder, or crew before they arrive:
1. If you are in the street, stay with the patient until the Ambulance,
or Community First Responder arrives and call back if the patient’s
condition or location change.
2. If you are calling from home or work, get someone to stand in a safe, prominent position to signal where the ambulance is required. (doing this can save valuable time).
3. Please lock away family Pets.
4. If you, or someone else can, - write down the patients GP details and collect any medication they may need.
5. Remember to stay CALM, Ambulance crews are there to help, and violence towards them will not be tolerated.
If you would like to find out more about what Community First Responders do,and could be interested in becoming one yourself, please contact:

Art@Dean - A successful return
After an absence of five years, Art@Dean returned to All Hallows, Upper Dean for the weekend of the 6th August. With the proceeds promised to be shared between All Hallows and the Dalton Hall, and with 35 artists and contributors submitting over 300 works ranging in price over ٟ,100 to 40p the challenge was on to make it worthwhile for all.
Over the Friday preview evening and the following two days it is estimated that over 300 visitors arrived from all the six parishes and much further afield so that at the close on Sunday the total income amounted to over £7,000 with over 50 visitors ordering works and prints, wood carving, pottery and ceramics, fabrics, photographs, and sculpture.
The total proceeds distribution to the two charities was over £1200 making the effort involved in the organisation and set up of the event more than worthwhile. Congratulations are due in particular to Marian Limb and Stephen Hall who took up the challenge, back in March of this year, of reinstating what had always been a very popular village event. During the setup they were assisted by Annette Brooks and Ted Welburn and by John Braga who counted up the proceeds afterwards.
It was truly a village event with numerous volunteers offering their support both in the set up and the stewarding of the event itself. A special thanks is due to Sue and David Butter for the advice and direct assistance in setting up the show, and to Marian Limb’s family for providing essential transport when required.
The village helpers included Ruth and Katie Holmes, Lynda Holyoake, Jane Wade who hung all the artworks so brilliantly to a very demanding time scale, with the setting finished off by Jackie Ashby’s superb flower arrangements throughout the Church.
At the preview Dean Ladies and their assistants put on a superb spread washed down with John Reynolds and Martin Wilkinson’s bar services. A quick thanks to the latter and Rosemary Neale for the provision of the car parking field.
Over the event, the Stewards team of Jane Wade, Lynda Holyoake, Jill Holden. Louise Jones, Andy & Mandy Pippard, Jeanette Dormer, Mike Muncaster, Jo & John Cordell, Rosemary Hallsworth, Roy Schulz, Barbara Baker, Anna Peck, Tony Hough, Annette Brooks, Roz Riggs, Ron & Liz Grasmeder, Jackie Ashby and Paul Kane made sure that all ran smoothly every day.
A sincere thank you to all who assisted and attended and see more of you next year.

Harvest Supper and Quiz
The Harvest Supper and Quiz is being held this year in Pertenhall Village Hall on Saturday September 25th, beginning at 7.30pm. It’s for a good cause and in aid of church funds. Tickets cost £10.00 and can be obtained from Julie Botterill (01480 861382) and David & Kathleen Eddowes (01480 860514). Make up at table of six or we will help organise one for you.
Pertenhall and Swineshead Quality Parish Council Meeting
A meeting was held in Swineshead Village Hall, on Wednesday, 21st July, at 7.30. It was attended by four Parish Councillors, Borough Councillor Clifton and three members of the public. Michael Whitlock was in the chair.
Grass cutting was discussed. There is a possibility that the Borough Council will take over the verge cutting and not supply the Parish Council with the money to choose their own contractor. Final decisions have not yet been made.
Ian Clifton has £1000 to offer to each village. Decisions will be made in September about this grant. There were problems with the Bulky Waste collection in June. The date had been changed but the clerk was not informed.
Bulky Waste collection dates are Sunday 31st October, from 12.00 till 3.00 in both villages. It is possible to check these dates and times on the Borough Council Web site.
The change to a two tier system for our local schools was mentioned. Councillor Clifton said that the changes are unlikely to take place.
A planning application for Hill Farm, Melchbourne Road, Riseley, was discussed. The application is for the erection of one farmworker’s dwelling, temporary for three years. The councillors decided to send in a “No comment” response.
Under the heading “Designations and Allocations”, a Borough Council document about planning matters in the coming years, the village map of Swineshead showed some modifications to the Settlement Area. This map can be inspected if you contact the clerk.
The August Newsletter will soon be distributed. It contains details of all the proposed road works in the parish.
Full minutes of this meeting are on a new web site, as soon as it is up and running, or posted in the village notice boards.
Agenda are emailed to those who have let the clerk have their email addresses. Please inform gtelling@gefh.ndo.co.uk if you would like to be added to this list.
The next meeting will be in Pertenhall Village Hall, on 29th September at 7.30.

Help for Heroes
A weekend of nostalgia at the Chequers but also a reminder of what our servicemen are going through for us in Iraq and Afghanistan today. Wartime memorabilia galore from tin hats to tanks and a lot more besides. A parade of vehicles visited Chelveston on Saturday and wound their way round Yelden on Sunday. A band of ‘Dad’s Army’ marched up Spring Lane early on Sunday morning followed by 2 ladies bedecked in authentic 1940’s outfits and hats – I know, my mother used to look just like that!
Bishop Richard led a short address of thanksgiving for the lives of our wounded servicemen and women and in this cause, over the weekend, Help for Heroes raised around £,250.
Bishop Richard then judged the house best decorated in 1940s style by driving round the village to view the participants. The winners were Jinny Casey and family whose ‘unexploded bomb’ in the driveway caused some consternation in Stanbrook Way.
