Honeycomb April 2010
Rector's Remarks
Hopefully you are reading this in the 1st week in April which is Holy Week with Easter day being on April 4th. On Good Friday, we will be (or have) enacted the story of Jesus’ trials and crucifixion along Park Road in Melchbourne. In St. John’s gospel, during Jesus’ trial in front of Pilate, Pilate asks the question ”what is truth?“
There have been two news items recently which made me ask the same question. The first was a radio interview in February this year with Ray Gosling about assisted suicide. During the interview Mr. Gosling said that in the 1980s he had murdered a friend dying of AIDS by suffocating him with a pillow. He had done so because the man was in intolerable pain. Mr. Gosling was very careful not to give any detail that could identify his friend, the exact date or the hospital where the incident took place. It was reported that the police had interviewed Mr. Gosling and we have heard nothing since. Without better details the police, no doubt, were unable to establish what was the truth in this situation.
The second incident actually occurred in January this year but did not hit the news until mid February. A group of men and women killed a Palestinian Hamas commander called Mahmoud al-Mabhouh at a hotel in Dubai. It turned out that the assasins were travelling on false passports several of which were British ones. It is widely believed that the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad were responsible for this murder. However, Israeli officials will neither confirm nor deny this. It is likely that we will never know the truth.
Both the above are truth as related to what actually happened. Another area of human endeavour that attempts to discover truth is the sciences. Many scientists will claim that it is only by using scientific method that the truth about how things happen can be discovered. Scientific method involves proposing an hypothesis which might explain something phenomena. Then experimental studies are undertaken to test the hypothesis. The studies must be able to be repeated if the hypothesis is to be proved. Once proven, a hypothesis is said to be the truth about the phenomena. However, in my lifetime many so called proven scientific truths have been overturned by later experiments. A small example is the use of morphine for pain relief. When I was nursing in the late 1960s morphine’s use was extremely restricted because it was known to cause addiction. Over the next decade or so studies showed that when used purely for pain relief it was not addictive. So, at best, scientific truths can only ever be provisional.
Probably next month, but maybe earlier, we will have to assess which candidates are offering us the most truthful version of what they see the future of this country to be. At the forthcoming general election we will be asked to vote for the candidate who is telling us the truth about what is best for the country. We will be bombarded with facts and accusations about other parties and candidates. We will be able to see the leaders debate on television up to three times. (As an aside, as someone who refuses to line Murdoch’s pockets I do not subscribe to Sky, so I am feeling a democratic deficit because I will only be able to see two of the debates). All should help us assess what is the truth. But it will be really difficult to finally decide on what is the truth. Only time will tell whether or not we were told the truth.
At a minimum there do seem to be different types of truth. There is truth that is based on facts and where there are insufficient facts truth cannot be established. There is truth based on scientific method which at best is only provisional until overturned by the next proven hypothesis. There is truth based on what we are told and choose to believe. We each have to assess for ourselves what we hold to be true. When the general election is held we will be deciding for up to five years as to what it likely to prove to be true. That will be difficult because truth often is a moveable feast. It could be tempting to duck the issue and not vote, particularly when we have so many reasons to be suspicious of our politicians. However, that is to avoid our responsibility as citizens. So I hope we all do vote and I pray that our collective decision does prove to be the truth.

Saint of month
Ever wonder where the prayer... ‘May I know thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, and follow thee more nearly, day by day’ comes from Richard of Chichester, a bishop in the 13th century, wrote it.
He began life as Richard de Wych of Droitwich, the son of a yeoman farmer. But Richard was a studious boy, and after helping his father on the farm for several years, refused an advantageous offer of marriage, and instead made his way to Oxford, and later to Paris and Bologna to study canon law.
In 1235 he returned to Oxford, and was soon appointed Chancellor, where he supported Edmund, Archbishop of Canterbury, in his struggles against King Henry III’s misuse of Church funds. After further study to become a priest, Richard was in due course made a bishop himself. He was greatly loved. He was charitable and accessible, both stern and merciful to sinners, extraordinarily generous to those stricken by famine, and a brilliant legislator of his diocese. He decreed that the sacraments were to be administered without payment, Mass celebrated in dignified conditions, the clergy to be chaste, to practise residence, and to wear clerical dress. The laity were obliged to attend Mass on Sundays and holy days, and to know by heart the Hail Mary as well as the Lord’s Prayer and the Creed.
Richard was also prominent in preaching the Crusade, which he saw as a call to reopen the Holy Land to pilgrims, not as a political expedition. He died at Dover on 3 April 1253. In art, Richard of Chichester is represented with a chalice at his feet, in memory of his having once dropped the chalice at Mass! One ancient English church is dedicated to him.

General Synod on children, science and computer games….
The General Synod met in London from February 8th to 12th. Among other matters it discussed were:
Children and young people Synod discussed Going for Growth, the Board of Education’s strategy for working alongside children and young people, which offers both a theological framework and priorities for practical action at diocesan and parish level.
TV coverage of religion and ethics The Synod carried a motion expressing appreciation of the vital role played by those engaged in communicating religious belief and practice through the media, while also articulating deep concern about the overall reduction in religious broadcasting across British television in recent years.
Clergy pensions Synod approved changes to the Clergy Pensions Scheme, subject to the necessary statutory consultation with members, and approved the recommendations of a report on changes to ill-health retirement provision. Synod also carried a motion requesting changes to the pension scheme’s rules to remove the remaining differences between the pension benefits for surviving civil partners and surviving spouses.
Science and religious belief Synod carried a motion urging the House of Bishops to promote a better public understanding of the compatibility of science and Christian belief.
Church buildings The Synod carried a motion calling on government for a substantial increase in the amount of money available for the repair of listed church buildings, including a commitment to continue the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme.
Computer games Synod carried a motion expressing concern about the potentially damaging effects on young people of computer games containing violent and sexual content, congratulating the government on the action it has taken in this area and calling upon it to continue to keep under review the regulatory system for advertising video games.
Women bishops The Bishop of Manchester updated the Synod on the work of the Revision Committee on Women in the Episcopate, explaining that having undertaken a considerable amount of work, the Committee was not yet at a position to bring forward revised draft legislation. It is anticipated that such material will be prepared in time for debate at the July Synod.

Mothers Union
A great afternoon was had on Wednesday 17th February when Anne Delight brought a friend to tell us all about a visit to Lourdes and escorting someone who had undergone healing. The coming month sees us welcoming Miss Susan Oxlade who will tell us about the pilgrimage from Winchester to Canterbury. I wonder if it will cover any of the Canterbury Tales? We meet at 2.30p.m. on Wednesday 21st. April in Pertenhall Village Hall and we welcome anyone who would like to come.We are struggling a bit with membership at the moment as this winter has left several people under the weather. However we really have had some excellent speakers so far this year.

Easter Hot Cross Buns
As you indulge in your Easter hot cross buns this year, pause to consider that really, a hot cross bun is a symbol of the Resurrection which refuses to go stale. A hot cross bun is a sermon in itself.
The shape of the bun reminds us of the stone that rolled away early on that first Easter morning – not to let a living Lord out, but to allow his disciples to discover an empty tomb. And the special spices used in the baking process bring to mind the gfits of love brought by faithful women to anoint their Master’s body.
The fruits of the Spirit of Jesus in the lives of his followers are represented by the sultanas and currents that make the bun so delicious, and the cross is the triumphant emblem of Christ’s work completed on earth.

Get dirty – and stay healthy
I found this article recently and I do hope it is true:
Next time your children want to play in the mud, let them. Children should be allowed to get dirty more often because being too clean can, it seems, impair the skin’s ability to heal itself. Scientists have discovered that bacteria on the surface of the skin play an important role in combating inflammation when we get hurt. The bugs also damped down overactive immune responses that can lead to rashes and swelling. The finding supports previous research which suggests that exposure to germs during early childhood can actually prime the immune system to prevent allergies.

Strawberry Fayre
Surely not! I hear you cry. It’s not so far away so please mark it off in your diary. Sunday 27th June. But first of all there will be an Open Meeting on Tuesday May 18th in the Village Hall for new members of the village to hear what Strawberry Fayre is all about and for the rest of us to remember how many people it needs to keep the standards, stalls and strawberry teas operating.
Yelden Tea Towels
Yes, tea towels. You will be surprised how far they have travelled, Australia, Canada, Bedford, and many kitchens throughout Yelden. But amazingly there are still a few available. They come in two colours, green or brown with notable scenes of the village and the two spellings of our name, Yelden and Yielden. So for a call to Sue on 355380 and £ 3.50, you could be a proud owner.

Review of ‘A Night at the Races’
The rousing event at Pertenhall Village Hall on Saturday 27th February was an unequivocal success! The hall was packed, eight races were available to bet on and bottles of cava given out to lucky winners. Villagers donated generously for the final race, even paying up to 㿏 on one horse.
The food itself was skilfully prepared; liberal amounts of nibbles, followed by jacket potato, peas, beef and mushroom casserole in a red wine sauce, with butternut squash as the vegetarian option. Afterwards, we were treated to banoffee pie or apple pie – and in the case of some, both! All proceeds go back into the community. Well done, everyone.
Plant sale
With spring just around the corner, remember to visit Pertenhall’s plant sale on Saturday 17th April from 12-4pm. We have many specialist Plant stalls and local suppliers supporting the Sale as well as a stall of locally donated plants. Admission will be free and tea and cakes are available for a small fee. All proceeds will be given to the Huntingdon & District Riding for the Disabled group. For more information contact Di Birtwhistle on 01480 860800 or Vikki on 01480 860729.
St. Peter’s Church PCC
The Annual Meeting of Parishioners of Pertenhall is to be held on Thursday, 15th April at 8.00pm in the Church. All are welcome to attend.
Pertenhall and Swineshead Quality Parish Council meeting minutes
A meeting was held in Swineshead Village Hall, on Wednesday, 10th March, at 7.00. It was attended by five Parish Councillors, Mayor Dave Hodgson, and 12 members of the public. Michael Whitlock was in the chair.
Mayor Hodgson answered questions about finance, pot holes, gritting, the future implementation of the new two-tier system in the Margaret Beaufort School, Gypsy and Traveller camps, what the Mayor would hope to add in value to rural life, rural buses and their departure points in Bedford, and the reasons for the lack of availability of parking after 8.00 in the evening in Bedford.
This was the Meeting for the Electors.
The following discussions took place and decisions were made:
- Reports were presented by the chairman, the councillors with responsibility for the Highways, and the clerk. There were 2 charities reports.
- From the floor there were comments about two new telegraph poles which had been erected in Wood End, Pertenhall, apparently to comply with EU regulations.
- The councillors were thanked on behalf of the village halls.
Parish Council Meeting
- Bulky Waste collection dates are Saturday 19th June and 30th October, from 12.30 till 2.00 in Swineshead and from 2.30 till 3.30 in Pertenhall.
- Grants were allocated for the year 2010/11 to the village halls, the PCCs and Honeycomb.
- There will be a question in the Newsletter about the Villager bus and whether any residents use it.
- Several planning applications were considered.
- The dangers of the bend in the road as speeding vehicles enter Swineshead from the direction of Melchbourne were discussed.
Full minutes of this meeting can be found on our meeting and on the village notice boards. Agendas are emailed to those who have let the clerk have their email addresses. Please inform gtelling@gefh.ndo.co.uk if you would like to be added to this list.
The AGM meeting will be in Pertenhall Village Hall at 7.30 on Wednesday 12th May, 2010. This is an open meeting and everyone is welcome to attend.

Christmas Collection
Father Charles Rennsberg visited Swineshead on 16th February and accepted a cheque for 䀄-60 from the collection at the Christmas Carol Service last December. He thanked the people of the village for their generosity. Last year’s donation bought mealie maize for 300 orphaned children in his Mission’s feeding programme in Zimbabwe. The political and economic situation in Zimbabwe makes it very difficult to obtain foodstuffs without paying in hard currency, and local food production has been badly hit by recurrent drought. Many of the orphans have lost their parents as a result of Aids and are themselves infected with HIV. In addition to its feeding programme, the Mission runs a hospital and an occupational training centre for young women.

Good news!
Proposals for the Village Hall extension have now been granted planning permission and the Extension Fund has received a considerable boost as a result of a grant. The Village Hall Management Committee, on behalf of the village, would like to thank the Rural Affairs Committee of Bedford Council for generously awarding a grant of £ 25,000 towards the cost of the proposed extension. In addition, our warmest thanks go to Councillor Ian Clifton for all his help and support. Thank you also to Rodney and John for all their hard work in making the grant application. The grant takes us one step closer to achieving our goal, but there is some way to go before we have sufficient funds. We hope the village will continue to support our fund-raising efforts, so we can all enjoy a much improved facility.
Dinner in the Village
Please make a note in your diary for a special dinner to be held in the village hall on the evening of Saturday 4 September and look out for the flyer in this issue of Honeycomb!

But first of all there will be an Open Meeting on Tuesday May 18th in the Village Hall for new members of the village to hear what Strawberry Fayre is all about and for the rest of us to remember how many people it needs to keep the standards, stalls and strawberry teas operating.

Lent Lunch

The Sixth Bell Bar will open as usual from 8pm on the first Friday of every month, the next being 2 April, followed by 7 May & 4 June.
Afternoon Teas will be served in the village hall from 3pm on Thursdays 1, 15 & 29 April and 13 & 27 May.

Thank you
Dinah, Nick and George would like to thank all their friends in Melchbourne and other Stodden villages, for all the cards, letters and flowers they received in the days following Grahams passing. It was a great comfort to know so many people were thinking of us. He loved living here in Melchbourne and enjoyed being involved in the PCC and Village Hall committee. We would also like to say a special thank you to Robin and Alison who were very supportive and helpful in the day’s preceding the funeral.
